First launched in 2011, Zipp’s 404 Firecrest wheelsets are not only firmly established as one of the fastest wheels on the market, but also they have arguably helped shape the entire category of modern aerodynamic wheels. This iteration, to use the company’s term, is no less than a ‘Speed Weapon’; a ‘weapon’ that boasts a 58mm-deep rim and weighs less than ever at 1470g. It is now cheaper than before, making this a product that’s virtually a no brainer. Whether you’re looking for a wheelset fit for a Spring Classic, time trial, triathlon, or simply to compete against your mates on the weekend club run, this is an option which is hard to look past. Single Purpose: Speed Whereas the 303 Firecrest is Zipp’s premium all-rounder, which’ll happily serve its rider on or off road, the 404 is all about going fast. Somewhat unusually, the company aren’t claiming to have made a more aerodynamic rim, quite the opposite. As the rim is wider, the shape is actually less aerodynamic than the previous version. However, a multitude of other enhancements — what has been termed Total System Efficiency (TSE) — has enabled the developers to produce a faster-overall wheelset. In addition to examining how wind resistance affects the wheels, the effect of gravity, rolling resistance, and vibration losses have also been tested. Notably, the internal width of the rim is now wider at 23mm, and has been optimised for a tyre of 25–28mm — depending on rider size. This allows the tyre to be ran at a lower pressure and in turn means it can roll more smoothly over imperfect road surfaces, increasing efficiency and making for a faster wheel overall. The weight of the wheelset has also been reduced, increasing its speed and lessening the impact of gravity when going up-hill. All this adds up to a wheel that is faster on varied terrain and ever-changing riding conditions. Going Hookless Hookless rims are slowly becoming the de-facto choice for wheel makers, at least in the high-end wheel space. What this means is, instead of the traditional ‘hook’ on the inside of the rim, the wall is straight. This comes with a number of manufacturer-claimed benefits. For one, with a hookless rim, the transition between the tyre and rim is less abrupt, which helps to cut a cleaner shape through the air. As well as the performance benefits, hookless rims are also cheaper, easier, and more environmentally friendly to produce, all of which amounts to cost savings for the buyer. The Hub Spinning the wheelset is an all-new, German-engineered, versatile and durable hubset. Using a six-pawl freehub, with 66-point engagement, the hub has a pick-up angle of 5.45 degrees so that when you put the power down, it’s translated to forward motion almost instantly. Overall, if you are looking for just one wheelset for road riding, be that for racing or simply for fun, then the 404 Firecrest is a difficult option to look past. Product Features Versatile aero wheelset for the modern road bike with tubeless and hookless rim profile Optimised tyre bed for easy tyre installation Wide 23mm-rim profile creates a better tyre interface to be fast on or off the road New ZR1 DB hub, with 66 points of engagement, is engineered in Germany with better seal design for improved durability and quicker response Ships with 12mm front and rear-end caps Disc brake wheelset Centerlock rotor interface. Fulcrum SPEED 40C C17 Carbon Road WheelsetThis versatile Road Wheelset from Fulcrum benefits from a lightweight construction, reliable all-weather control and a 40mm rim profile for exceptional rolling performance. Perfect Tyre to Rim InterfaceThis wheelset is capable on any terrain you come across. Featuring a 17mm internal rim width, it is perfectly suited to both 25 and 28c tyres. It has been designed to create the perfect tyre to rim interface with these modern tyre sizes, placing it firmly in the modern competitive race wheel category.Stiff and ReactiveThe Longitudinal Twill carbon rim design has been implemented into the creation of these wheels. The fibres and the orientation in which they are structured pushes the boundaries of carbon fibre construction, resulting in a stiffer, more reactive rim that can also absorb higher levels of road vibration.Exceptional Braking PerformanceIn addition to the technology that Fulcrum has developed to make their wheel go amazingly fast. They have also applied the AC3 braking surface to this model, which makes slowing down noticeably more responsive and powerful. This advanced coating on the braking surface provides exceptional braking performance and as a bonus, it also reduces rim wear.Features:Material: Rim: Carbon Twill; Front Hub: Carbon, Aluminium flanges; Rear Hub: Aluminium; Spokes: Stainless Steel; Nipples: AluminiumDiscipline: Road, TriathlonTyre Type: ClincherRim Profile: 40mmRim External Width: 24.2mmRim Internal Width: 17mmBraking Surface: Twill, AC3 TreatmentAxle Compatibility: Quick ReleaseSpoke Type: Aero, Double ButtedSpoke Count: Front: 18; Rear: 21Bearings: USB Ceramic, Cup and ConeFreewheel: Plasma CoatedQuick Release: YesWeight Limit: 109kgWeight: 1.42kgTechnologies:AC3 - All Conditions Carbon Control: AC3 enables surprising braking performance, which is very noticeable in difficult weather conditions. Rather than using the traditional machined brake track approach, Fulcrum uses micro laser incisions on the brake track surface to remove resins and create a smooth surface. Lab tests have shown that this process improves braking power by an improvement of 6%. However, in the wet this performance increase jumps to 43%. Bringing braking in the wet closer to the performance experienced when riding in dry conditions.USB (Ceramic Ultra Smooth Bearings): Using high-end ceramic balls, which perform continually thanks to the absence of lubricating grease and the precise machining of the cup and cone technology, the friction is reduced drastically and in turn increases the smoothness of triathlon and road bike wheels by as much as 9 times compared to standard bearings.Rim Dynamic Balance: Simple and Elegant, the weight of the rim gasket is balanced on the opposite side with an item of similar weight.2:1 Two-To-One: Every push on the pedals from the rider will force most of that energy on the drive side of the rear wheel. To combat this loss of rim tension and power transfer, Fulcrum has solved this cycling problem with their 2:1 spoke ratio pattern by doubling the spoke count in crucial zones on the wheel.Direction Rim-Spoke Coupling: An exclusive rim/spoke mounting system. It allows the rim, spokes, hub and nipples to align perfectly, guaranteeing the precise spoke tension in all areas around the wheel.Anti-Rotation System: This system locks the spoke in place once the correct tension is achieved. Engineers at Fulcrum have designed this system to ensure the spokes never lose their initial tension and to remain in the position that has been proven to provide the perfect aerodynamic properties.Unrolled Rim Bed: Featuring no holes on the central section of the rim means that the rim is uniform at every point, free from critical areas subject to stress. The advantages are immediately clear: less weight, longer lasting rims, greater resistance to fatigue, the possibility of giving the spokes more tension and more stiffness which, in terms of performance, means improved responsiveness and acceleration.Plasma Freehub: The freehub body has been Plasma treated, which makes the aluminium especially hard and resistant to surface abrasion and wear. This means the thickness of materials used can be to be reduced to a minimum, achieving a lighter weight, while maintaining lifespan and reliability.Buy Fulcrum Wheels & Tyres from Chain Reaction Cycles, the World's Largest Online Bike Store.

The Shimano 105 R7150 Di2 groupset is perhaps—without exaggeration—the most hotly anticipated groupset of the century. Even in mechanical form, the 105 series is widely regarded as one of the most reliable and affordable performance groupsets, with the introduction of electronic the gap between the brand’s mid-tier range and its top-tier is now closer than ever. A Battery For The Ages: The introduction of wireless shifting might leave you feeling concerned you’ll be forever charging batteries and living in perpetual fear you’ll be stranded in you biggest gear miles from anywhere. But with 105 Di2, power is supplied via two CR1632 coin cell batteries in the shifters, which should provide over three years of life. With such a range, even the heaviest of users shouldn’t find themselves in a constant state of charging and re-charging batteries. Semi-wireless Setup: 105 R7150 uses the same semi-wireless, 12-speed shifting setup as the top-tier models. The proprietary semi-wireless system means there is no longer any need from wires to the shifters to the derailleurs. Since there’s no need for wires and cables, the cockpit of a bike set up with 105 Di2 is cleaner and less cluttered than ever. Shift Into Gear: Of course with the change to electronic gearing, one of the most significant changes to the groupset is in the shifters themselves; the all-new 105 ST-R7170 levers now operate in much the same way as the top-of-the-line shifters. Shifting gear couldn’t be simpler: click a button on the shifter and almost instantly you’ll hear the derailleur whir into life. Drawing on Shimano’s years of experience in electronic shifting, you can expect smooth gear changes at the touch of a button. Without the need to accommodate levers, wires, or ports, the shape of the R7150’s levers has been brought more in line with the sleeker Ultegra and Dura-Ace shifters. The new, slimmed down, STI levers are also more ergonomically shaped, thanks to the raised hood peak and offer more opportunity to refine the reach. The Brains Of The Operation: Another significant change to previous mechanical setup is in the front and rear derailleurs. The rear derailleur is an integrated, 12-speed wireless unit, which will comfortably accommodate an 11–36T cassette. Such a wide range of gears is perfect for those big climbing days, without spinning out when the road tips back down or when you’re racing along in fast bunch rides. The rear mech uses Shimano’s Shadow technology is incorporated to reduce the risk of the derailleur hitting the chainstay in rough-riding conditions, and to provide smoother, quieter performance. The 105 Di2 front derailleur offers the smooth shifting you’d expect from the Japanese component makers. It can be programmed to be manual, or full or semi-synchronised, accommodating a 50T or 52T chainring. Crank It Up: Shimano continue to deploy their famed Hollowtech II technology in the R7100 crankset, which is now 2x12-speed. This is the same technology they have employed in the 105 range for years, and features also in the company’s premium lines. The result is a sturdy crankset, that is stiff and relatively light. Incorporated also is Hollowglide technology, which offers more precise and efficient power transfer than ever before. Shimano have been able to reduce the weight of the crankset but maintain stiffness, strength, and performance. For 105 Di2, cranksets are available as a compact (50-34 tooth) and in crank-arm lengths of 170, 172.5 and 175mm Stopping Performance: The 105 hydraulic disc brakes of the previous iteration were highly capable; for the latest ST-R7170, Shimano have further improved braking performance. The lever-action required for braking is now lighter and smoother, offering a greater area for braking control. For 105 Di2, the clearance for pads has been increased by 10%, reducing braking noise. Overall, rain or shine, you can be assured of high-performance stopping power. Included: Left and Right Shifters (ST-R7170) Flat Mount Brake Calipers (BR-R7170) Chainset (FC-R7100) (50-34T) Cassette (CS-R7100-12) (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 27, 30, 34T) Front Derailleur (FD-R7150) Rear Derailleur (RD-R7150) Rotors (SM-RT70) Di2 Battery (BT-DN300) Blog - Shimano 105 Di2 is here - Electronic Shifting for the Masses
